Master

In the first year of the MPSE programme students have the choice between four different research Masters (equivalent to M Sc in Economics). This year is the second year (60 ECTS) of the European Master, after selection of the best students coming out of the first year (ex-Maitrise) or students awarded with a Master from a foreign University:

Master in Economic Theory and Econometrics
Master in Economics of the Environment and Natural Resources
Master in Transports and Networks Industrial Economics
Master in Financial Markets and Intermediaries

These four Masters share some common courses, with each having specialised courses.

    The academic year is divided into three terms and students normally take eleven courses or seminars during the academic year, this number being reduced to eight for those who do an internship during the third term.

    In order to obtain the Master's degree, students must :

    *    obtain passing grades in the core subjects of their Master ;
    *    obtain passing grades overall ;
    *    write a short research thesis (called a "mémoire"), which shows that they are able to synthesise and expand on recent literature.

    This timing enables students to get a taste for research earlier than in traditional PhD programmes where the first year is entirely dedicated to basic courses.

    Those who have failed exams at the first session can take their exam again in September when a special examination session is organised.

    Important : In July, an examining board composed of faculty staff will determine which students are accepted for the second year of the MPSE programme. Students who carry on with the second year are normally expected to undertake the full PhD programme.

    Second year (DEEQA)

    The academic year is divided into three terms and students take  9 courses and an annual research worshop. Some of these courses complement the basic training received in the first year, whilst others are advanced courses or workshops based on the most recent research. In many of these courses, a written paper must be produced and this will enable students to develop their PhD dissertation topic. At the end of the year students must present a more substantial piece of written work, usually based on the work done for one of the seminars or worksshop, which shows their ability to write a publishable research paper..

    At the end of the second year students who have satisfactory grades in their course work and in the presentation and defence of their research work are awarded the DEEQA, Diplôme Européen d'Economie Quantitative Approfondie. They then embark on their PhD research full time.
